Born in ice and fire, Norse mythology starts violently...and strangely. There's a blood ocean, a giant primeval cow, and some light grandpa murder. Thor and Loki take two kids on a field trip to Jotunheim, where, like any family vacation, Thor gets in a drinking contest and wrestles an old lady. Then, Odin travels to the far reaches of the void for wisdom and learns that he must pay a terrible price only to learn that the end, when the universe will once again be bathed in ice and fire, is coming.
The creature of the week is the sandman and you shouldn't let your kids listen to it, especially if it's right before bedtime. Basically, growing up in the middle ages was terrible and I don't know how anyone made it out without some severe psychological trauma.

Always loved Norse mythology, still do and I love especially how you put it together on this podcast. Just a question, I thought Buri was Odin’s grandfather. Buri’s son was Bor and Bor’s son was Odin – these are the gods. Ymir was a giant and not a god and his children were the giants. Apparently Ymir is not related to Odin by blood in any way.
I had always listened through my android podcast app, and never had the opportunity to see all the cool artwork on the site. It’s a really nice touch!
I actually have heard the Thor and Loki story before. Long ago, in 1978, Marvel adapted it for a story in Thor #272. They got rid of the two children, and if memory serves, the castle too(?), but it’s beat for beat the same story! Marvel takes many liberties with the Norse mythologies, but I’m glad to see that they were indeed researching them.
Nice! I’m going to go find that. Thanks for the issue number!
Absolutely loving the Norse stories. Not sure if this is the beat place for suggestions but could you do an episode expanding more on Ragnarok?
This is a great place for suggestions! And yes, there will be an episode or two on Ragnarok. How could there not be?? :)
What about an episode for Inuit myths? I wrote a paper in Sedna the Sea Witch when I was doing my undergraduate degree, but there are several other fascinating characters and stories
