It's the story of "The White Cat" by Madame d'Aulnoy, and in addition to questionable parenting, there are quests, dwarves that are just doing their job, evil fairies, and cat ballet.
What happens when you see something you can't live without? A thing you desire so strongly that you can't stop thinking about it. Do you give up everything to try to get it?
Maybe? But if what you're willing to give up is your child and the thing you desire is fruit from the garden...maybe rethink your priorities. It's the story of "The White Cat" by Madame d'Aulnoy, and in addition to questionable parenting, there are quests, dwarves that are just doing their job, evil fairies, and cat ballet.
The creature this time is Adar Llwch Gwin, a pet that's probably too obedient

A guy has to cut the head and tail off a friendly pet cat. I promise it's not as gruesome as it sounds and everything is ok, but that's there.

The “kid’s foot” isn’t either a child foot nor a baby goat foot, but actually a deer foot… not sure it makes more sense though ^_^
Here the original:
Translated it would be: He returned to the golden gate; he saw a deer’s foot tied to a chain made entirely of diamonds, he admired this magnificence, and the security with which they lived in the chateau. For after all, he said, who prevents thieves from coming to cut this chain, and tear off the carbuncles? They would get rich forever.
As for the “hands” in the original text they feel more like “hands floating in the dark” and not severed hands. As for the “mild violence” the original says that he was pushed quite firmly actually…
Translation: He pulled the deer’s foot, and immediately he heard a bell ringing, which seemed to him gold or silver by the sound it gave; after a moment the door was opened, without his seeing anything other than a dozen hands in the air, each holding a torch. He was so surprised that he hesitated to move forward, when he felt other hands forcefully pushing him from behind. So he walked very worried, and, on the off chance, he put his hand on the hilt of his sword; but on entering a vestibule encrusted with porphyry and lapis, he heard two ravishing voices singing these words:…
Hope it helps!
Thank you for your work, it’s GREAT.
PS: My favorite episode? Definitely 301. That’s the very reason why I’m vegan. Thank you for sharing it.
Who does the episode art? I especially love this week’s adorable cats!!
I’m a long time fan, I’ve listened to your podcast since the beginning, thanks for sharing these stories!!
Thanks! It’s actually Carissa and me. We pay for Adobe Stock/Freepik and have some pretty limited Illustrator skills to arrange things. Well, *my* skills are limited. Carissa is a wizard with Photoshop but she’s writing the book right now so pretty much all the show art has been me, lately.
No updates on what “kid’s foot” means? ?
This is my favourite fairy tale! I remember that I wrote a college essay on how the themes of this tale reflect a critique of traditional 18th century family dynamics, where men are encouraged to jockey for power within their families and women are discouraged from seeking their own happiness outside of what their family prescibes. Both this tale and The Discreet Princess from the French comtesses are unfairly overlooked imo. Thanks for covering!
Tomato is a sweetie. Though I think we should have a Battle of the Cats to discover the best cat.
BTW, can you touch what I imagine is glorious floofeh belleh floof?
I believe we were told there would be cat pictures?
Wow! You made quick work of that episode. Thanks for the reminder. It should be up on this page now.
