We're back on the road to the Trojan War, with the story of Achilles. Starting from when his father interrupted the ritual to make him immortal, we'll follow him as he goes to that epic Greek daycare run by Chiron and watch as his mother tries to keep him away from the war that is beginning to consume the Greek world.

A brief but relatively in depth lead-up to a sexual assault. We stay vague and nothing super explicit happens, but it might be difficult for some to listen to.
Listened to this on spotify today, thought it was great. Had a suggestion for the website, though. Could you possibly add a section about all of the mythological creatures mentioned at the end of each episode? Your podcast has helped me in my decision to get a mythological tattoo, but I can never remember the creatures more than a week after listening to an episode. Thanks in advance!
I was wondering why you decided to ignore the romance between Achilles and Patroclus in favour of Deidama who, in the larger context of the story, is less important to him than Patroclus (whom he fought, wept, and died for)? It feels like you ignored a large part of what makes Achilles’ character/motivates him.
Absolutely! This story was largely focused on what happened in the Achilleid and the fact that Achilles was on Scyros and fathered a son there who would go on to play a role in the later war. The relationship between Achilles and Deidamia was a necessity in that regard.
We went (much) further into his and Patroclus’s relationship when we covered the Trojan War: https://www.mythpodcast.com/14142/177a-trojan-war-rage/
I had the same question, Maya!
Hi!
Thank you so much for this episode, it was very interesting and mind-shifting!
I’d love to hear the next part soon, Achilles has always been one of my favourite myths and I can’t wait to hear more!!
Is it me or does the audio sound different, I hope it doesn’t stay like this.
